WALKING IN ART RHYTHM
by Farah Piriyeva
ART & PSYCHOANALYSIS
One of the most frequent questions I have always been asked is What is Art for you?
Personally for me Art is Carl Jung’s “Nothing worse could happen to one than to be completely understood”. I find it sad when you look at the artwork on a wall and it tells you everything…It shouldn’t... When I first launched my blog 6 years ago, I defined art as a phenomenon that shows us the way to this secret subliminal world of irrationality, with no boarders or landmarks, a place only of beauty... it was the last time when I tried to define art…
I can say without any doubt that each one of us, whether in our youth or later in life, creates a secret world, a place only of beauty. Studying and collecting art from almost forever, I have developed a desire for it. It’s my parents who got me involved in art in the first place. My mother has always been a passionate art collector, so I was literally raised surrounded by beautiful objects. Each member of the family has this constant desire to support a talent, 10 years ago my brother founded Buta Art Center, supporting and promoting azeri art worldwide, together with our dad sponsoring many exhibitions, festivals, plays and books.
Born in Baku, raised in Moscow, I received my Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Moscow Plekhanov Academy of Economics. I then moved to London to study History of Art and Global Art Market at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, where I continued doing my Masters Degree in Fine and Decorative Art. At the moment I am doing my second MA course in Culture, Curation and Criticism at UAL: Central Saint Martin’s.
My career path started in Sotheby’s Auction house, when I co-curated an exhibition called “Unseen Salakhov” dedicated to the art of a great Soviet artist Tair Salakhov (a part of the Buta Art Festival 2009/2010), later I joined the auction house seeking out new experiences and continued working along various galleries, such as Alon Zakaim Fine Art and Opera Gallery. Working within this commercial environment, I have decided to step away and go back to curating. I have been asked to curate the visual part of the II edition of Buta Festival in London, 2014-15, which was a grandiose event and put the art of Azerbaijan on the map.
Today, alongside my studies, I continue collecting, consulting and writing art reviews for various art publications, as well as running my dearest Walking In Art Rhythm.
